LaManyanasdeLa1The new world technique that allows the coloration of the cornea with maximum scientific guarantees was presented today in Spanish Television by Dr. Jorge Alió. His new technique was presented on the occasion of the recent publication of the book ‘Text and Atlas on Corneal Pigmentation’ , which was supported by the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness and the Centre for the Development of Industrial Technology (CDTI).

Permanent eye colour change for cosmetic or therapeutic reasons is already a reality tanks to research conducted by Dr. Jorge Alió. The professor and chairman of Ophthalmology at the Miguel Hernandez University of Elche has implemented this new and worldwide unique technique which allows femtosecond laser assisted colouring of the cornea. Given the importance of this medical progress, the professor had published ‘Text and Atlas on Corneal Pigmentation’, the first book in the world devoted to keratopigmentation. The publication, intended as a guide for eye care professionals, was presented at the last annual meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) in Las Vegas. It is worth mentioning that at this event Dr. Jorge Alió was presented with ‘ISRS Presidential Award’, a prestigious award which recognizes his dedication and contribution in the field of refractive surgery and to the International Society of Refractive Surgery.

Solid clinical research allows highly qualified personnel from Ophthalmic clinic Vissum Alicante to perform eye colour changing surgery with the maximum guarantee of success. It also should be mentioned that the personnel have been working in the area of corneal pigmentation for more than 12 years. The keratopigmentation is prescribed for patients, who suffer from corneal opacity or have a completely white cornea due to any pathology. Formerly, these problems could have been resolved only by use of cosmetic contact lenses. Furthermore, this technique also allows semi-permanent eye colour changing for cosmetic purposes. The first step in this surgical procedure involves use of femtosecond laser with subsequent application of a desired colour pigment.

‘Text and Atlas on Corneal Pigmentation’ is the first work in the world devoted to keratopigmentation, which involves femtosecond laser assisted colouring of the cornea for therapeutic and cosmetic reasons. The book was supported by the American Academy of Ophthalmology ( AAO), the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness and the Centre for the Development of Industrial Technology (CDTI). This novelty, which consists of three sections, represents a highly illustrated review of keratopigmentation, including clinical outcomes, histopathological safety and surgical treatments. It is an ideal resource for ophthalmic surgeons, particularly corneal specialists, who wish to update their knowledge of keratopigmentation. This book was written by Jorge Alió in collaboration with Maria Alejandra Amesty MD, Moorfields Eye Hospital in the UK; Alejandra Rodríguez, MSc Senior Biologist/Microbiologist, Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) Department VISSUM Corporation; and Mohamed El Bahrawy MD Senior Clinical Research Fellow, VISSUM.
