Dr Jorge Alió, Professor and Chairman of Ophthalmology in the Miguel Hernandez University of Elche, participated on Friday in the 10th Research Institute of Ophthalmology (RIO) International Meeting, held from 20th to 22nd January at the Semiramis Intercontinental Hotel in Cairo, Egypt. At this event Jorge Alio, who had been recently presented with “ISRS Presidential Award” by the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) for his dedication and contribution to the field of refractive surgery and the International Society of Refractive Surgery, gave several presentations which were based on his knowledge and experience.
Thus, the creator of the concept of microincisional cataract surgery (MICS), spoke of the combined use of express valve with cataract surgery; cataract surgery in difficult and challenging cases: bilensectomy, capsular bag avulsion managed by MICS; and the ways of managing the unhappy multifocal patient. He expressed his opinion on the decision to choose femtosecond laser assisted cataract surgery (FLACS), which was based on the evidence and cost effectiveness of the procedure. And finally, he spoke of the keratoconus and presbyopia treatment.
Furthermore, on Saturday January 16th Jorge Alio organized the First Seminar of Continuing Education in Ophthalmology at the Palacio de Congresos of Alicante, in the official college of medicine. Thus the professionals from the Ramón y Cajal Hospital in Madrid, the University General Hospital of Elche and VISSUM Corporation in Alicante held a meeting called “Update on the diagnosis and treatment of retinal pathology” which was a great opportunity to see the reports and case studies devoted to retinal diseases treatment. This event formed part of the activities of the Ophthalmic Research Thematic Network OFTALRED.
