The Alicante ophthalmologist discussed new surgical alternatives for treating age-related near-vision loss at the International Intra-Ocular Implant Club (IIIC) meeting held in Hanoi.
Prof. Dr. Jorge Alió participated in the 2026 biennial meeting of the International Intra-Ocular Implant Club (IIIC), held from 1 to 5 November in Hanoi, Vietnam. He thus presented the advances in phakic intraocular lenses for the treatment of presbyopia, one of the areas of innovation in refractive surgery. His presentation, entitled “Presbyopia Phakic IOLs”, took place within the “Ocular Surface / Refractive Surgery” symposium, moderated by specialists Steven Schallhorn and Roger Zaldivar.
New strategy for vision correction
The Professor of Ophthalmology and Honorary Researcher at the Miguel Hernández University (UMH) of Elche discussed phakic intraocular lenses for presbyopia. This is a visual condition associated with ageing that progressively makes it difficult to focus on nearby objects. These lenses are implanted inside the eye without replacing the natural lens. This undoubtedly represents a surgical alternative of particular interest amongst the new strategies for vision correction.
A scientific programme featuring presentations, clinical case studies and discussions
This event brought together leading international specialists to discuss the latest developments in cataract surgery, intraocular lens calculations, refractive surgery, the ocular surface and new ophthalmic technologies. Its scientific programme combined presentations, clinical case studies and discussions on the main challenges facing the speciality.
Improves patients’ visual quality
The participation of the President of the European Academy of Ophthalmology in this global forum further enhances the international visibility of ophthalmological research conducted in Alicante. It also reflects Dr. Alió’s contribution to the advancement of surgical techniques aimed at improving patients’ visual quality. He has been ranked the 7th Most Influential and Inspiring Ophthalmologist in the World in Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and the only Spanish doctor among the top 50, in The Ophthalmologist Power List 2025.
