Dr. Jorge Alio has started the academic year participating in the 36th Congress of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS), which was held on 22-26 September 2018 in Vienna, Austria. As usual, Jorge Alio, the professor of Ophthalmology at the Miguel Hernandez University (UMH) of Elche, played an active role offering courses, medical presentations and moderating sessions on the advances and novelties in techniques and methodologies to improve visual health.

In this way, Dr. Alio, the academic of the Royal Academy of Medicine of the Valencian Community (RAMCV), had the opportunity to share his knowledge and experience participating in the refractive surgery didactic course, being one of the responsible people for the section of the therapeutic techniques. Likewise, he offered several instruction courses on ‘ Femtosecond laser assisted corneal surgery’, ‘Custom excimer laser surgery’ and a live presentation on ‘Therapeutic refractive surgery’. In addition, he was one of the members of the ‘Presbyopia Workshop: the new era’.

It should be noted that Jorge Alio and his team gave more than 20 presentations and scientific conferences during 5 days of this European event, and were mentioned in about 15 medical articles published in digital format. The articles were dedicated to a wide variety of topics, from general topics such as corneal surgery or training and quality of vision, to very specific, such as keratoplasty, corneal grafts, endophthalmitis, ocular infections, the neural network as a tool to improve clinical outcomes in the keratoconus treatment with ICRS, as well as new techniques, instruments and devices for refractive surgery.

Jorge Alio also paid attention to such issues as glaucoma and posterior segment, the ocular surface and the quality of vision, as well as the causes, visual results and patient´s satisfaction when exchanging multifocal intraocular lenses using a different multifocal technology. And it is necessary to remind that Dr. Alio is the creator of the concept of microincisional cataract surgery (MICS) and has been a pioneer in the area of multifocal, accommodative, and toric IOLs.

Moreover, Jorge Alio gave a presentation on a pilot study on visual and optical quality outcomes after small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE), intralase laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (IntraLASIK), and transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy (TransPRK) for myopia correction. In addition, Jorge Alio, the medical director of Vissum Vissum Ophthalmological Corporation, took part in the jury of experts that was designated to assess the video competition, organized by the congress, and to choose the winner.

It should be mentioned, that Dr. Jorge Alio was ranked twelfth among the world’s most influential ophthalmologists in the list of 100 professionals, entitled ‘The Power List 2018’ drawn up by the British magazine ‘The Ophthalmologis’. Moreover, he published an article ‘Cellular therapy of the corneal stroma: Real approach or science fiction? ‘ in the prestigious journal ‘Ophthalmology Times Europe’. The article is devoted to the research, carried out by the doctor and his collaborators, into extraocular mesenchymal stem cells, which could be an alternative to the classical cornea transplantation.

The constant study and dedication by Dr. Alio have been key factors for patients to have placed him among the best doctors in Spain within the framework of the ‘Top Doctors’ directory. Also, he was recently chosen by the newspaper El Mundo, as one of the ten doctors in ‘The elite of the scalpel’, being the only ophthalmologist selected.
